At All Aboard Ohio, we believe that passenger rail is more than just a mode of transportation—it's the key to building a more connected, thriving, and sustainable future for our state. With the release of our executive summary, Ohio Runs on Rail: Intercity Passenger Rail to Connect Our State, we are excited to share our vision and call to action for revitalizing Ohio’s rail network.

Read the executive summary:

A New Era for Passenger Rail in Ohio

By embracing the Federal Railroad Administration’s Corridor Identification and Development Program, Ohio has an unprecedented opportunity to expand its rail network. Key corridors like the 3C&D Line (connecting Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Cleveland), the Cleveland-Toledo-Detroit route, and the Midwest Connect corridor (linking Chicago, Columbus, and Pittsburgh) represent the foundation of this vision. These initiatives will bring connectivity not only to Ohio's bustling cities but also to small communities across the state.

Passenger rail isn't just about getting from point A to point B. It's about enhancing mobility, reducing congestion, fostering economic growth, and improving the quality of life for Ohioans. With an estimated $230 million in yearly economic benefits, these projects have the power to transform the way we live, work, and travel.

The Time is Now

Federal grants tied to the Corridor ID program will become available in mid-2025, unlocking millions of dollars in funding to study and develop passenger rail routes in Ohio. By participating in these initiatives, our state can take bold steps to ensure that passenger rail becomes a reality—connecting communities, driving economic development, and reducing our environmental footprint.

The Benefits Speak for Themselves

Investing in passenger rail will bring a range of benefits to Ohio, including:

  • Economic Growth: Amtrak’s vision estimates significant annual economic impacts, such as $130 million from the 3C&D corridor and nearly $100 million from the Cleveland-Toledo-Detroit corridor. Construction and operations could create thousands of jobs and spur billions in economic activity.

  • Connectivity: New daily train routes will connect Ohioans within the state and beyond, making it easier to commute, attend events, or explore new destinations.

  • Safety: Passenger rail promotes reliable travel for all age groups, reducing car dependence on Ohio's overcrowded highways.

States like Missouri and North Carolina have already reaped the rewards of investing in similar passenger rail routes, demonstrating the transformative potential of rail for local economies, tourism, and mobility.

Action Steps for Ohio

To make this vision a reality, we must take decisive action:

  1. Rejoin the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission (MIPRC): Partnering with regional leaders will align Ohio with neighboring states’ rail projects and strengthen our collective efforts.

  2. Complete the Corridor ID Process: This federal initiative provides the roadmap and funding needed to bring passenger rail to Ohio.

  3. Support the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC): Ensuring robust funding and leadership for ORDC is essential to managing passenger rail projects effectively.

Join the Movement

Together, we can make passenger rail a cornerstone of Ohio's future. Let’s seize this opportunity to connect our state, empower our communities, and set a new course for sustainable, inclusive growth. All aboard, Ohio—the future is on track!
