Service Paused
Currently being replaced by the Floridian: An Amtrak route running across the North of Ohio
Overview
The Capitol Limited, a route steeped in history and scenic beauty, is set to receive transformative upgrades as part of Amtrak's major investment in long-distance intercity rail travel. This initiative is propelled by a historic, multi-billion-dollar investment under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which has enabled the modernization of the Capitol Limited and other long-distance services across the Amtrak network.
Route Enhancements
Traveling between Washington, D.C., and Chicago, the Capitol Limited traverses the historic B&O route, winding through the picturesque river valleys of the upper Potomac, Youghiogheny, and Monongahela Rivers. The route offers travelers an unparalleled view of America’s natural landscapes, with rail trails often visible across the rivers, providing a unique juxtaposition of nature and the enduring legacy of American rail.
Improved Schedule and Travel Experience
Travel Times: Westbound trains from Washington depart before the afternoon rush, arriving in Chicago the following morning, while eastbound trains leave Chicago in the early evening and reach Washington by early afternoon. This scheduling maximizes convenience and allows passengers to enjoy both the tranquility of nighttime travel and the beauty of daylight views.
New Fleet and Onboard Amenities: As part of the fleet modernization, the Capitol Limited will feature new railcars that enhance comfort, accessibility, and overall passenger experience. Upgraded coach seating, private rooms, and superior food service options will elevate the journey, making it as enjoyable as the destinations themselves.
Advanced Locomotives and Refurbishments: The service upgrade includes the introduction of cleaner, more efficient ALC-42 locomotives and a $28 million investment in the interior refurbishment of Superliner and Viewliner cars. This will ensure a modern, environmentally friendly travel experience.
Restoring Equipment: The revitalization effort also extends to restoring and repairing idled railcars, enhancing Amtrak’s capacity to provide reliable, high-quality service.
Commitment to the Future
These enhancements to the Capitol Limited route reflect Amtrak’s commitment to revitalizing its long-distance service and ensuring that it remains a vital part of America’s transportation infrastructure. The upgrades will not only improve operational efficiency and sustainability but also transform the service to meet the needs of today’s and future travelers. Passengers on the Capitol Limited can look forward to a journey as rich in comfort and convenience as history and scenic beauty.
